Best GPU for stable 1080p 60fps ultra detail gaming

Hi Everyone,
need to change case to microATX and I decided to make some more upgrades while at it.

I originally wanted to buy GTX 970 and mobo capable of SLI to plan for when I buy 4K TV a year or two from now. But all this latest about VRAM games requirements makes me unsure I would be fine to buy 2nd GTS 970 two years from now and still enjoy new games at 4K high/ultra detail.

So I am more thinking atm to just buy a microATX mobo for my i5-3750k and a new GPU (have sapphire hd7870) which would handle any game at stable 60fps on 1080p TV. I can then upgrade for 4K TV when I actually buy it...

Would GTX 970 be an overkill or not at all for 1080p/60fps? I am fine to buy it if it is not, just don't want to pay for something I don't need.
I have Witcher 3 mostly in mind once it is out, but also plan to play Shadow of Mordor for example and would like to get every graphic setting to ultra.

Thanks!

From what i remember for high game recommends over 3GB of ram and for ultra 6GB @1080p
I've finished it on 7850 with 2 GB and honestly even on low textures it looks awesome and hardly had any drops bellow 60 fps at high all except of the textures being set to medium,

Imo better wait for 3xx cards from AMD... the rumors are quite promising especially about stacked ram, also nVidia is going to throw 8GB cards in the coming months.

If you have a 7870 currently I would just stick with that until you need more GPU power. Don't upgrade your card now if you're not upgrading your monitor for 2 years. In 2 years, there will be much more powerful GPU's to buy.

GTX 970 would double the FPS compared to HD 7870 .

well, that's an option too I know. But I am afraid what would the new games do to my hd7870. I sit fairly close to the TV when I play games and don't want to be forced to use low/medium settings. I remember I had to turn oversampling off in Witcher 2 and that is not a new game.

Few months is not a big deal...i would just wait and see what AMD throws from the factory, it will definitely change the prices over the market. Personally i believe its the worst time to get new parts due to Christmas hassle.

Well if you want better performance now, a 970 is a great option. But the longer you wait, the more technology improves. And if you are going to run a 4k monitor, you will need all the power you can get.

What I kind of hear everyone saying is 'wait as long as you can' for the better products/prices.
I have to buy mATX z77 mobo now as they seem to be gone online and I only found one or two available at the local stores, but will wait until first game gives my HD7870 too much trouble (ie. fps drops at high settings) to replace it.
Which I would estimate being somewhere around May when the Witcher 3 comes out, I can breeze through my less-graphically-demanding backlog until then.
Hoping some 8GB VRAM becomes affordable then. Or 6GB at least.

Thanks to all
