I have a I5 4690k processor and an MSI R9 290X graphics card, both of which are supposedly very good. However, I got Far Cry 4 in a promo deal for my SSD and i'm unable to run it very well, much less on ultra like i thought my PC could. I did some research and these components should be able to handle this game. Why might it be so laggy? Please help!

That's what I thought, however frame rate and frame time are both terrible, even on minimum settings. Also, sorry im a noob, but could you give me a quick explanation of thermal throttling, id love to learn something new.

Have you fully updated the game (I believe they are on patch 1.5.0) and using the latest drivers (AMD Omega)?

Far Cry 4 was released in very poor shape. It may still not be fully optimized.

You also didn't tell us what resolution your running either, this is very important.

Far Cry 4 is still horribly optimized, especially for AMD.
Wait for updates.

There are some minor fixes you can apply before that, though.
Make sure you have all AA features disabled. Or only SMAA
Make sure ambient occlusion is set to SSAO.
Turning off god rays.
Turning off fur.

Those settings seem to be causing the most trouble for AMD when set above the levels I just listed.
Sucks, but that's what happens when games are poorly optimized.
Just have to wait for updates.

Alright, again im going to show my lack of knowledge, but AA, SMAA, Ambient Occlusion? Im sory for being such a hassle, but i really appreciate everyones help

When you start the game, the version number of the game will be on the menu screen (new game, continue game, etc)

Even if it's the 1.5v you will still have random stuttering and overall poor/choppy performance on AMD. Especially when in a vehicle.

All of the settings I listed will be under the "Advanced options" for the video settings.
AA is anti aliasing... anything above SMAA drops FPS for AMD by an unacceptable margin.

The setting for ambient occlusion will be labeled as ambient occlusion. Change it to either off or SMAA (smaa for quality)

Fur will be labled as dynamic fur. turn that off for performance.

God rays will be labled as god rays. Turn that off for performance. Do not enable Nvidia god rays, use the middle option for quality.
