my router wireless connection works but I want to connnect via ethernet for higher speed. cable connected but do I have to config my laptop?

You shouldn't need to do anything other than to attach to the router with an Ethernet cable. The wired connection should be higher priority than the wireless, so you should not have to configure anything as long as your laptop has not been changed from the default to obtain IP address automatically.
