Windows 8 randomly freezes on either install or afterwards

Hi there. I am hoping that someone here could help me out with this problem that has been bothering me for days. I recently purchased my friend's computer, its slightly outdated but has new-ish graphics card and RAM, and a brand new 2 TB hard drive. He previously had no problems when running Windows 7 on it, so the problem either be the hard drive or compatibility issues with Windows 8. I ran the motherboard through the Windows Compatibility Center and it said the motherboard is compatible. Anyways, the specs are as follows:

  • Intel Core i7 Processor
    Gigabyte GA-X585A-UD3R Motherboard
    Geforce GTX 760 Graphics Card
ST2000DM001-1CH164 ATA 2TB Hard Drive (new)
ST3500418AS ATA 500 GB Hard Drive (old)
    Windows 7 Ultimate

Now when I run the Windows 8 install disk, it proceeds as normal until it reaches the "Getting Ready" part, where it may or may not freeze. Then I would reset it and it reverts back to Windows 7. I would sometimes try again, and either same results or it would actually proceed and finish the installation. At some point after that, about 10-15 minutes, it would freeze again, and after reset it tends to freeze before just after the splash screen. After several attempts of this, I would then reinstall Win 7 and take a different approach.

I've read up some ways I could solve this but with no luck. I've updated the BIOS to it's recent version, most of the chipset drivers (still unsure which SATA install to choose from), and installed Windows 8 from both a fully updated Win 7 and a fresh install of 7.

If you guys can help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Also it does crashes on Safe Mode, sometimes before login, or as its running, similar to when in normal mode. It sometimes will crash to a BSOD with something to do with clock_watchdog_timeout. It runs perfectly well with Windows 7

Computer still runs fine with Windows 7, there hasn't been any problems with it for the previous owner, and there was no change to the CPU. Although it might be possible that it may be faulty.

EDIT: Before the edit the post was a little misunderstood. The Win 7 runs fine, the BSOD error occurs rarely when it freezes on Win 8.
