Hello folks-
I apologize in advance if this post is misplaced, but this is my first ever post here and I figured I would start with the OS to troubleshoot my computer before moving on to hardware.
In October 2014 I bought a bundled desktop package from Tiger Direct consisting of:
INTEL I5-4690K CPU, 3.50GHZ, 6 MB,LGA-1150
MSI Z87M GAMING LGA 1150 Z87 MATX MB
KINGSTON 4GB 1866MHZ DDR3 DIMM HYPERX (x2)
ADATA SP600 Premier 128GB 2.5" SATA III
Cooler Master Elite 241 w/550W, USB 2.0, w SD Card Reader
Put it together, installed my old copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, updated Windows, etc etc. Well, immediately upon using the computer I noticed three problems:
1) computer will not restart itself- Windows will shut down but I do not get that brief pause in activity that one would expect- the computer itself never seems to stop activity. I am forced to hard boot it anytime I need to restart Windows (which of course the OS doesn't much like)
2) I've went over the connections a dozen times- and took it to a local computer place- and for some reason the reset button on the tower does not work. Push it as I may it does not initiate a reset.
3) It sometimes fails to recognize the USB ports in the back of the tower. I have four there, two in front. The two in front work fine, but those in back are hit and miss. I tried several times to update USB drivers from Microsoft, but it still seems to depend on what mood the computer is in.
Personally, I have my suspicions about what is going on, but I wanted to pose this question to a well-regarded tech forum as well to see what others could offer. All the parts are under warranty, so if it is a hardware issue I can get a replacement or rebuy the parts outright if need be. But I'm hoping it doesn't come to that because this is a work computer (architecture/ land planning/ graphics) and I can't afford a lot of downtime.
EDIT: This is what has been tried so far (either by myself or the computer tech):
- reinstalled Windows. Updated Windows
- checked all connections, including that specifically to the reset button
- updated all drivers we could think of, including USB drivers
- updated BIOS for the mobo
- even tried restarting computer on its side because why the Hell not at this point?
- checked RAM by pulling out and reinserting in every order. RAM is fine.
Thanks so much in advance for everyone's help!
