Hi all,

I am looking for a build that is used for gaming and some longevity. I don't plan on overclocking anytime soon (i don't know how yet) but maybe in the future when the build needs it. I know the graphics card and the cpu are the most important so I plan on getting the GTX 970 4GB and i7-4790k respectively.

After that I'm not sure exactly what I should be looking for when getting the other parts. If you could possibly explain your reason/logic for your picks it would be extremely helpful in helping me learn and understand.

Please exclude OS/monitor/optical drive/keyboard/mouse from the build since I have access to those.

After talking to a friend about building the computer, he's recommending I get GTX 980 and i5-4690k since i7-4790k doesn't help much in gaming but the GTX 980 has significant boosts and more longevity. Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Parts explanation:
I5 4690k: Good bang for buck, overclocking capability, perfect if you don't need to do video editing.
NZXT Kraken x61: I wanted one of the best aio coolers for my money. Great temps (20c idle, 58c max). Perfect for overclocking. Matches case branding.
Asus Maximus VII Hero: Awesome quality, awesome fan control, awesome overclocking support. I love this motherboard.
Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB ram: Nice colour coded kit. Lifetime warranty. Still 2 slots free for an additional 16GB kit.
Intel 730 SSD: Do not pick it unless you want the ultimate reliability and want to sacrifice speed and some extra cash. I got it $90 off. You can't notice the speed disadvantage. 15 second boot times on windows 8.1. I love the...

ill try explain and be quick. new mobo's z97 have 1button oc, im using msi's one everything is perfect. it does OC ur cpu and ram.
these ram support XMP means can be overclocked to 2133 at 1.65v
i added a monter hydro cpu cooler for the monster i7. u will be able to run it at least to 4.4 with a press of button and not even worry about the temps.
no comment about the psu, tier 1, high quality componets.
u can choose ur own case, just be absolutely sure that it fits the gpu. gigabyte 970 is 310 long. this case fits if u remove the drive bays, maybe not. not sure.
thats all for less than 1400 xD

Here is a build I have just completed. It currently is costing $1500 but it was $1400USD ($2000AUD) when I purchased the components last month. I have an overclocked i5 4690k and a Gigabyte GTX 970. The GPU is also overclocked and can run Far Cry 4 on ultra settings with simulated fur and god rays on (max graphical settings). I would go a GTX 970 and if you need extra grunt, overclock it. Or you could SLI it in the future, which is what. I intend on doing.

Seagate 1tb: Cheap mass storage. What more can I say?
Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970: In my opinion, this is the best if the bunch. Cherry picked cards, high factory overclock with 400+MHz headroom, ultimate cooling (the top temp I have gotten it on a benchmark after 4 hours is 64c). Also it has a backplate, metal fan shroud and a ridiculous amount of video ports at the back. Really quiet even though it has three fans.
EVGA SuperNova 850w G2 Gold: I am in love with this power supply. Fully modular, gold rating, great size, has a fanless mode and a 10 year warranty! Don't think of getting anything else. There is also a 750w version. My system uses a projected 360w. So I have plenty of legroom
NZXT h440: I love the aesthetics. Has no 5.25" drive bays. Lots of stock included fans. Nice and quiet.

And there you go! If you need any assistance, just ask me.
