I have just built my computer. I have a WD Green 3TB HDD. I am copying files (370GB) from an external hdd to the WD .. I am getting write speeds of around 39MB/s. Is this write speed normal, or should I be expecting something higher?

Solution
Your write speeds will depend on a few things when doing a copy from an external to internal drive. These factors will include the amount of files and their respective sizes, the read speed of the drive they are stored on, the speed of the connection to both drives, the position of the date on the reading drive if it is mechanical, and of course the speed of the drive writing the data.

If the files are large the green drive will be able to write faster if they are smaller it will go a bit slower. Random reads on the external drive will also slow the transfer.

Basically there are a lot of factors that go into the write speed. So basically the answer is that it depends. But the maximum speed should be around 90 - 140MB/s for read and...
it depends on the kinds of files being written. If it is small files (pictures and documents) then that might be a bit on the fast side of things. If it is large files like Movies and music then that seems a bit slow as it should be able to hit a pretty easy 80-120MB/s when dealing with large files.

What is the external drive plugged into? It may be bottlenecking this whole process if it cannot get data to your drive fast enough.

I is just a seagate im copying files from .. There is alot of media on the drive, so I guess thats why there is such slow write speeds.
