Here's my build...

I upgraded to the 290X from a 7770 ghz. I wanted to play Planetside 2 on Ultra. I can do this now, but the fps still drops to around 25-35 fps in med to heavy battles. Shouldn't this card be doing better? where's my bottleneck? Do I need to get more RAM? it does get up to arouund 6gb while playing. I sure can't record while playing because my CPU goes to 100% then. I don't know. I was thinking of getting the 8350 to help, but now I want to just get the MSI MPOWER motherboard and a i5-4690k as an upgrade. Ideas? I should mention that during the free COD AW weekend, I was unable to play the multiplayer at max settings.

Solution
Big battles result in lots of particle effects which put a strain on the CPU. If you would be using a monitoring program, you'd see your GPU usage going down when said explosions/particles/lightning effects are happening.

To improve your situation, either dial back the particle option (if there is any) or overclock your 3.9 GHz FX 6350 to 4.5 Ghz and you should be seeing much improved performance in heavy situations.

I don't know how good is Planetside 2 optimized for multicore systems. If it's really good multithreaded, an FX 8320/8350 will net you a much better sustained FPS than an equivalent priced i5. (except the 4670k/4690k when overclocked)

Planetside 2 tends to favor Intel CPUs. If you are getting 25-35 fps with a 6350, thats pretty good since most report its at min 14 fps. If you go to an 8350, you should see minimums of mid-30s. If you go Intel Core i5, you should see mins around 50. But if you record with an i5 that will probably drop to mid-30s. If you record with an 8350, you should not see a drop at all due to the number of cores. You could always look for tweaks to more favorably use your CPU. You can also do some bios tweaks like turning off the power manager as that can sometimes cause issues.

I would say turn your rig into a 2k setup with a new monitor and a overclocked 8320 but your motherboard lacks the power phase needed.

Might as well go for a i5 just make sure you know what your getting into with a mpower motherboard.

I have not seen a single game where an fx 8350 comes close to beating an i5 4440. And I have read a lot of benchmarks.

I have overclocked. don't know if I mentioned that. it's at 4.4 ghz now with a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 (that thing's not bad for the $15 pricetag) I think I'll just go to a 4690K with MSI z97 MPOWER mobo since it would match my Lightning well and perform much better. Just hope my mom and dad buy it for me for Christmas. lol I'm 18 and they still probably won't want to buy me computer components. :/

Hey, I am overclocked to 4.4 ghz with the Hyper TX3. I'll probably go intel 4690K and keep the TX3 as a temporary solution until i can liquid cool. I always like to overclock, i mean why not? :)

Haha yeah I feel like it's a good upgrade. I could always get a 4790K later to really push the limits with that setup
