I'm interested in setting up a home security camera, but I'm unclear on how a modem and/or router CAN handle traffic. My connection is a VERY unreliable 3mbps DSL, and obviously cannot even handle the load of one YouTube video being watched @ 720p. Can I install a router to handle the traffic of a wireless camera without interfering with the modem's ability to handle the internet traffic?

First of all, if u run the camera at full ptential, it will eat all your bandwidth.
Try to run it at a lower resolution and lower frames per second.

U will have to connect it after your router, via cable if u can.

If u want more image quality and also surf the net, u will need a better internet connection, 10 Mb/s + or more.

Thanks Marc, I understand that much so far ( and that's about it on this subject ). I'd still like to know if there's a networking setup that would allow me to run my Camera's stream to my local HD with no needed internet access on it's own, and then my normal internet access on the modem it's on right now. Appreciate the reply.

All my cameras run via cable to a NVR (network video recorder). The NVR is then tied to my network switch. That way all video traffic is segmented to the NVR only unless I ask to stream it.

In your case, have your cameras connected wired/wireless to your router. If you do not stream over Internet, you can watch the video locally without a problem as long as you have Wireless G/N or AC.
