I owned an acer pc with windows xp media center edition in 2005. An unfortunate incident destroyed it, but the back up discs I made survived. I have kept them, and have been informed that I can only get them to work on an acer product. What I am wondering is if the computer has to be the same as the one I had, and if not, what viable options for acer products are available to me?

The backup disks that you made would have to be capable of a full install, which they are often not. Even if they were you would need an old machine that had drivers for that OS version.

Your best bet is to get a new machine that runs Windows 7 or 8.1.
