Hello,

This week (provided all ordered parts arrive) I'm going to significantly revitalize my PC. I am replacing pretty much everything except for the motherboard, processor, sound card and O/S SSD. All components to be moved are only two years old (O/S SSD and graphics card are new); I will probably upgrade the mobo/processor within the next 12 months or so. I have a recent fresh install of Windows 7/64 on the O/S drive and I intend on using it as is in the new build.

I will be moving my current mobo to a new case and I'd like to do an immensely better job cabling the new build than the guy who built the machine I'll be updating - what a mess. With this notion in mind, I'd like to relocate both my sound card and a USB 3.0 controller card to different PCI-e slot locations on the board below the graphics card. This brings me to my first question: Will I need to uninstall/reinstall both sets of drivers for the relocated cards, or will Windows automatically update the new slot positions?

The new case (NZXT. H440) has no front bays and I will no longer use my onboard optical drive. Should I uninstall the drivers for the DVD-ROM before powering down the old machine for the last time? As well, am I correct in reassigning the boot order to USB 2.0 as 1st in sequence? I have ordered an external USB 3.0 optical drive which will revert to 2.0 if needed.

Thanks in advance!

No, and No. The optical drive drivers are native to windows and even if they were not, they do not require any installed applications. Ripping and burning software that may be installed is up to you if you don't want to use it with the external drive then uninstall any currently installed applications.

The other drivers don't care a whit about which PCI slots the hardware is installed in and windows will automatically redetect the hardware's new location and configure any necessary changes to the system.

Boot sequence makes no difference whatsoever unless you plan to boot from an external or network device. As long as any potential boot devices, such as an external drive you may reinstall the OS from, show up in the list of boot devices, you can set them in any order you wish so long as your actual OS drive is listed first.
