do expensive mobo's offer better stat's or just more bells and whistles?

Hello,

should i buy a really good mobo like:
maximus hero 7
gaming G1
Sabertooth

or just an extreme4 , UD3H or Z97-A

I only want 2-way sli, i DONT need wifi or something like that.

My real question is: do the high-end boards offer better stats or just more bells and whistles?

For up to two GPUs the main differences are with the "bells and whistles" AND drive configuration. The three in the comparison link below would be the ones I would choose from. They all will support a good overclock...

yup, found all 3 of them :) i'm opting for the gigabyte UD3H right now.

So there is no performance difference between an asus G97-a and a asrock extreme9 for example?
A UD3H has the same performance as a sabertooth ( where the last one has some added stuff, but not faster pci-e ports or something )?

really depends on your use. a basic office machine can get away with the cheapest mobo out there, a high end oc'ing machine would melt this same mobo if it even could overclock.

if you just want a solid mobo that will support your hardware, the z97-a and others like it will work fine. the high end is more for someone who want's to tweak and control every last thing in the system and some. so long as you tailor your mobo to your use, then you will be ok.

my experience is that the marketing hype has solid control over pc gaming and has done a heck of a job convincing folks they can't game on anything less than $2000. this is probably why so many have moved to consoles, it just seems easier and cheaper with less to learn. there are differences but they won't be used for the most part unless your doing high end stuff with it. that's why it has the high end specialty price.

yo answer your new question, "performance" should be pretty much the same. usb 3.0 is usb 3.0 and pcie 3.0 x16 is pcie 3.0 x 16.

most of the mobo's use the same off the shelf parts for networking, sound, chipset and many other features. they just chose what parts they want and drop em onto some silicon. true the internals matter but at the midrange they are not that different. super budget to ultra high end will be a jump but midrange is good enough and works well.

Hey mathgeek, thanks for the explenation, that's what i was looking for.
I suspected the higher end board were for overclocking but had no real use if you weren't gonna do that, or add more GPU's.

I also follow you in the gaming 2000€ hype. just finished this build, gonna buy it next year:

I just want a rig dat will last a few years. a build that steps up to the 2017 games and bitchslaps them ( you know what i'm talking about, with the back of the hand right across the face ). A rig that sneaks up to GTA 6 and kicks it in the nuts. And that, unfortunately, has it's price.

Enough with the funny business, you think my mobo is up to par with the rest of the components or a bit on the weak side? I'dd like everything to be balanced.

ok i just spit my soda onto my keyboard  thanks for making my morning.

i'd say you got the system you wanted. your gonna be making games your bitch for a good few years.

hehe, your welcome, it's 17.00pm over here and after a full days work i'm now officially in goofy mode. Do you have any experience with overclocking? is it hard or easy as pie?
Do people actually overclock brand new systems or after one or 2 years when they tend to slow down a bit?
I'm just really scared i'm gonna fry my system at which point i just have a 2000€ bbq that can cook meat and give it a plastic smell at the same time.

no mater what board you go with you still got to match the rest of the parts to it.. its not like your getting a 250 buck board and then put a low end i3 in it ??

you could go with a z97 extreme 6 for $150 with a i5 or i7 and a no less than a r9 280x card and it will do all you want real nice -- in the end its all about the balance of the build

i hear you, which is why i have the feeling my mobo isn't really up to par with the other high-end stuff in my case.

Those other components might pick on my little mobo and call it a nerd and a loser and an underachiever. That would make me angry, i want a nice and quiet rig. High squeeky voices should be avoided as much as possible.

I'll have a look into the extreme 6 and the UD5H.
Is it worth looking into sabertooth and hero 7 or is that too much for just dual sli?

i have dabbled with oc'ing over the years but not the hardcore stuff i read about. for instance my i5-4690k is set at 4 ghz instead of 3.5. i have an msi gaming 5 mobo and it's software let me do this with a mouse click. i clicked, it did something then set it at 4 ghz and asked if i wanted to go higher or leave it. that's my oc experience lately :D

back in the old days i did do a pretty good oc on an old amd 800 mhz chip (it was new back then so BACK OFF!!) and got it going almost 900 mhz on stock cooling and such.

take a look at the msi z97 gaming 5. might be a good mix of quality and it's not $200. even has points on the mobo for voltage checks and all kinds of neat things i like to show people but will never use.

the gaming 5 mobo has lots of bells and whistles i don't need but i liked the color scheme and it was on sale so i went a little overboard with it. was part of a bundle with the 4690k and 8 gb of ram with a combo discount of almost $100 so the ram was free and the board was only about $100 instead of $140 ish it was. if you can find such a deal, then by all means go for the bells and whistles.

Sadly we don't have that many 'deals' in my country. It was actually forbidden by law until last year ( something to do with brand competition and monopoly's, silly Europeans right ). But i appreciate the input. I'm gonna sit down and think long and hard on overclocking, the meaning of life and whether or not God is a girl.

all you can do is line them up and start eliminating it down to the 2 you feel is best for you then flip a coin and go for the one it lands on .. my last build came down to a asrock z87 exe6 and the gigabyte z87ud5 . the giga just happened to go up in price and the asrock went on sale .. so it was settled, I went asrock ..

pretty close to how i do it. just start narrowing them down until the price is right. love newegg's filter system. can pretty quickly get down to a few choices then just kind of say "yah that one has a cool box" and click add to cart.

Shit i'm lying i went home alone all my life.
