Buying Dragon Age Inquisition on retail DVD and running it unpatched?

Recently I've been on the fence on getting Dragon Age: Inquisition and it's mainly because of reports that the latest patches caused major performance issues. It seemed that players had much better performance on it before the updates. I have Origin set up to disable automatic updates, so is it possible to install the game from a retail DVD and running it in its launch version without Origin installing updates?

Origin forces updates. You could launch origin in offline mode it might work then, but honestly I wouldn't worry about it, the dev's will fix the game if a patch messed something up or nvidia/amd will address it with a driver update .

So, if I cannot reach 60 fps in this game on high/ultra and suffer CTD / stuttering issues as others are experiencing, will I be spared from all of those technical problems by simply running the game locked to 30 fps? I will if I need to if that's what it's going to take to enjoy the game. Not to sound like a console purist, but it would be a last resort solution for running badly-optimized games.

There is nothing wrong with lowering settings a bit. As far as the stuttering, I haven't noticed it once I removed v-sync and the 30 FPS cap on the cutscenes. You can play at 60 FPS, just not at maxed out settings. It's still the same game, and still looks good on high.

I purchased the retail copy of the game and installed it from disc. When Origin began downloading the update, I immediately aborted the update process and launched the game anyway. So far, the game runs at a smooth 60 fps on ultra settings with MSAA disabled and no DSR. Cutscenes look laggy, but there is a fix for it which I will implement later. So far, so good. Thanks for the feedback, guys.

unfortunately i'm stuck with the digital origin version and wish i didn't patch the game :/ now its unplayable
even tried a reinstall just for the heck of it, still unplayable its way to unstable now, even with all settings in medium and i adjusted the by disabling one core, it used to work before now its just a lagged mess lol

After the patch, when you first start moving within Skyhold, everything is slow for a few seconds, but it eventually works itself out. With Nvidia at least, they released no drivers, which fixed that issue for me, and the game is running great now.

What card do you have goku4125?

You should try the latest beta drivers, it appears to have solved any issues I had.

I patched yesterday and now wish 'i didnt as they fixed the dupe glitch, also own the digital copy so have a dillema, it seems the only solution is to do what the OP did and buy the physical copy.

Visually things look like they have been downgraded also.

I installed the latest patch and the game runs great for me. No crashes so far and GPU optimization has improved all across the board. About the dupe glitch, do you mean the cheats where you can get unlimited amulets of power in Crestwood? I never really used it and am kind of bummed that I didn't. I'm waiting for mods which will induce god armors or something like that.

At this point, I probably do not regret my decision to patch the game. I must have been lucky on this one. I backed up my original game folder and game saves just in case I need to roll back, but maybe I will not need to.
