Yeah the 280 is hotter but not by too much, it is really the 280X and up that starts getting really hot, And the 280 will blow away the 760 performance wise.

You only have to worry about heat from the r9 280 if it has a reference cooler. I'm pretty sure all you can get now are custom cooled cards from each vendor. These cards DO NOT have a heat issue.
The r9 280 and the GTX 760 trade blows from game to game, but the r9 280 has an extra gb of ram and overclocks really really well. That much so that you can beat a r9 280x or gtx 770 that are running stock clocks fairly easily.
