Laptop with Gigabit Ethernet vs Fast Ethernet

Hi -

I am considering the purchase of a Lenovo G710, which seems a really decent i7 machine in my budget.

However, one review I have read cites the lack of a Gigabit Ethernet port as a flaw in the machine.

How important is this, and what does this even me to a regular internet user?

Is this going to mean I cannot fully utilise high speed internet when I get it?

If someone could explain for me whether this matters and why, I would be grateful.

Thanks.

Depending on where you live, it may be quite a long time before gigbit internet comes to your town. Google has limited cities where they are rolling out gigabit internet. Verizon FIOS offers 500 Mb/s at a hefty price in certain areas.

That laptop is limited. You could purchase a USB ethernet adapter. At this point, if you aren't doing large file tranfers across your home network, I wouldn't be too concerned with gigabit ethernet.
Fast ethernet is 100 Mb/s so unless your ISP provides you with 100Mb or more of bandwidth, then fast ethernet is fine. Gigabit is used more for internal LAN's to make file transfers between computers faster.

Also, a computer with a gigabit port will do you no good unless other computers and devices (routers, switches,...) on your network are also gigabit capable.

Thanks Hawkeye.

How expensive is it to upgrade this later? Is it even possible, or is it a m/board change?
(If for example my ISP did hit those speeds in the future)

Just one further thing.. you say 'that laptop is limited'. In what respect do you mean? It seemed fairly well spec'd to me... i7 quad core, 8GB (expandable to 16), Thought it looked a decent model(?)

My apologies. I quickly glanced at the specs and misread part of it. Looking at it again, you should be in good shape depending on how you plan to use it. It's a good laptop, just don't expect to play games at the highest visual settings, but since your concern seems to be the internet, it's more than enough for web browsing and typical daily use.

:)
My main concern isn't actually the internet, that was actually a side 'issue'.

My young son will be wanting to game on it. Minecraft, Roblox and Gary's Mod mainly. He does most of his other gaming on a console.

I had posted elsewhere asking for opinions on this machine vs another http://

The other machine did not have a dedicated graphics card, half as many cores, but twice as much RAM, so I wasn't sure which mattered most.
