Hi,

I just bought the parts for my first from scratch build, mainly:

r9 290
z97x-gaming3
TS550W XFX

I put everything together, except for graphics card and it booted to bios. But after installing the graphics card the computer does not post, it does not show any signs of life (no lights, no fan, no nothing). If I remove the card it boots just fine.

I installed it into the PCI-e x16 slot, connected the power (8pin + 6pin).

Is my card bad (note it seemed as if I received a already opened box, it was not sealed and it seemed used) ?

Thank you for you help

Could be two different things:

1. A bad card, happens sometimes but it should be under warranty if you bought it new, just RMA.
2. Could be that the PSU doesn't supply enough power. It may be rated for 550w on all rails, but you might be drawing more than it can output on the 12v rail. (ex. Say it was rated for 550w total, 400w on the 12v and 150w on the 5v, but you are trying to pull 430w from the 12v it won't work.)

You need to find out which one it is by trying to install the card in a different system or borrowing a different PSU. Good luck!

If I do not connect 8 and 6pin to the graphics card the computer boots fine and the fans on the graphics card are spinning, but as soon as I plug in the 8 and 6pin nothing happens, no boot, no fans, no lights, nothing.

Could be a bad cable, but that's pretty rare. The only real way to find out is the two ways I stated earlier. You need to test the system with a borrowed PSU or get someone to put your card in their system to see if it's the card. I'm sure if you go to a local PC repair shop you can just pay them like $10 to try your card in one of their computers and if it doesn't boot you know it's the card.

The 8 pin PCI cable is really hard to insert into graphics card, maybe there is something wrong with the connector on the card? If so, what should I look for?

I guess it's not the PSU since it's brand new and I read in the manual that if it detects short switching / faulty components it automatically stops and this seems exactly what is happening.
