Hey guys,
I'm trying to unlock the two disabled cores in my AMD Phenom II X4 840T, but have had no success. Whenever I enable "unlock cpu core" in my BIOS, my computer automatically shuts down. I also have ACC set to auto and AMD cool n quiet off. This is proving to be very frustrating can someone please help me. This is basically what I want to do
http://www.amdzone.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=139247

and here is what my bios looks like: http://s76.photobucket.com/user/clon22/media/760GM_E51/760GM_E51_bios_1.jpg.html
Please help!

Either one, or both the locked cores are bad. You could enable one core at a time and see which core or cores are actually bad. I did this with a few 960T's which unlocked to five cores. Only one...

Sorry to say but you have the wrong CPU for core unlocking. The 840T is a disabled 6 core thuban however these CPU's were disabled mostly due to hardware faults and die salvaged as quads to avoid profit loss. The CPU you want is the 960T that had a successful unlock rate of over 90%. These CPU's were generally perfectly functioning 6 cores intentionally locked to meet demand in AMD's ailing quad market. The release of the new FX's was a flop and they weren't selling, to make matters worse supplies of Deneb Phenom II's were drying up as well. The 960T was intentionally created to temporarily fill that void in AMD's quad core market.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

What if I just upgraded the motherboard? I'm currently looking at the Biostar A785G3. It has unlocking capabilities and is under $80 bucks. It would be sufficient for me, since I'm on a budget.

Pros
-$65 shipped
-Supports x6
-125w CPU Max
-SB710 for unlocking
-DX 10.1
-Onboard Radeon HD 4200
-DDR3 up to 1333 but I believe some people have it at 1600.
-Lots of good reviews on Newegg + successful core unlocking stories!

Cons
-only 2 RAM slots (8GB)
-1 PCI-E x16 slot

Your motherboard is not the problem. Either it supports core unlock or it doesn't. Even a dirt cheap ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 is not going to unlock cores any better or worse than a $300 Crosshair V Formula-Z. The problem is your CPU, your cores were locked because they were not properly functional. Instead of just tossing the faulty 6 core in the trash AMD opted to salvage the die and disable it to a quad core.

None of the four cores are bad. I enabled them one at a time, and my computer booted up just fine. And, I cannot access the two locked cores, so maybe their the ones that are bad???

Again... Those 2 cores are locked for a reason. It is not like your motherboard has this magical ability to automatically repair and unlock cores. From the sounds of what you are describing these cores have actually been laser disabled on the die which means they were very bad to begin with and were fully disabled instead of just locked due to partial instability.
