So it's my first build, and I'm seriously panicking. The problem is that I don't know what the problem is. I have a Zotac Gtx 970, I5 4440, Corsair CX500, Team Vulcan 8 GB RAM, and a B85 G41 PC Mate Mobo.

When I was putting together my PC a week or two ago, I was almost done, so I put in my GPU. I screwed it in, added the 6 pin power connectors, and made sure it was snug in the slot. I used the DVI-VGA adapter that came with it (since I have a monitor with a VGA cable). I powered my pc on, and all the fans, lights, and gpu fan came on. The monitor displayed a "no signal" error, so I assumed it was some kind of first time startup thing. I came back a minute later to find it still had a black screen. The PC was on, and my motherboard had no Speaker, so I didnt have any Post sounds. I seated and reseated the GPU over and over, plugged the cables in and out, and I tried every possible fix I could find. (I should mention the GPU smelt like something was burning, but it might have been some wierd thermal solution).

I decided the GPU was broken, so I sent it back, and I'm currently waiting for a refund. The PC works fine with Integrated graphics, and I'm actually typing this on integrated graphics on my I5-4440. It plays some games fine as well.

All I need is reassurance it was the GPU that was broken. I'm pretty sure my 500 watt PSU is good enough for all my components, and I'm positive everything was fit snug. Lastly, I should mention that on the bottom of the GPU near the contacts there was colored paint or something. There were tiny blotches and specks of blue and red and green, which I'm sure isn't normal.

I'm not sure what the blotching was, that's something I haven't seen. I also haven't smelled anything 'odd' or alarming turning on a new gpu for the first time. As for the video, sometimes it has to be set in the bios to run off the pcie graphics instead of the integrated. If not, there are situations where it will default to the onboard (in this case on die) graphics. Basically you'll have your vga cable plugged into the gpu when the bios and pc are funneling the signal to the onboard display ports. You might have to tell it what your default graphics are.
