How do I change the rear audio jacks in windows 7 to default to headphones instead of speakers?

I'm currently using Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit), specs are:

CPU: i5 760 @ 2.80GHz
RAM: 16 GB
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 460
Motherboard: ASUS P7H55-M PRO

I built this PC about 3 and a half years ago and used a pretty old case that has no front 3.5mm jacks. I also have no sound card and no HD-audio drivers of any kind.

Previously I'd used USB headsets but the cords on those things are so cheap they wore out within 6 months. After going through about 5 pairs of USB headsets (each more expensive than the last) I decided to switch to a 3.5mm jack input instead, and it's worked pretty well so far, but I've recently had some issues that led to a troubling discovery. Basically: windows 7 thinks my headset is speakers.

Near as I can figure out, Windows 7 has it set so that the rear panel is for speakers and the front jacks are for headphones, and it will just assume anything plugged into the rear panel is speakers. The obvious solution is to just use the front jacks, but as I stated early on: I don't have any. I'd have to rebuild my entire computer inside a new case just to get some. So the solution I want is a way to force windows to recognize my headphones as headphones regardless of where they are plugged in so I can properly configure them.

What's more confusing is that the volume control actually knows that they're headphones even if the playback device manager doesn't.

I've done a lot of searching around and there's a lot of people who have this exact same problem but manage to work around it by using an audio manager for an audio card (that I don't have) or by simply using other jacks (that I also do not have). I've tried everything I can think of and can't get windows to do this one simple thing, I'm considering just going back to cheap USB garbage headphones again because at least those I could tweak as headphones.

What are you missing as a headphone option? The line out on the back of most systems will drive headphones without any issues.

Since you already know the exact model of your board, you can just grab the Realtek drivers(that come with an audio manager) from the Asus or Realtek website.
