is this gimping me? i have 2x2GB stick and 1x4GB stick. the 4GB stick is froma a local computer store, microcenter.

if theres better alternatives, which brand? and also, would it be worth switching to better ram? will i notice a difference in performance?

the kind of ram does not matter nearly as much as how much RAM and what configuration it is in.

I would replace the 2x2GB set with another single 4GB stick and put them in dimm 0 and 2 (or 1 and 3). This will let you have 8GB of ram in a true DDR config where right now only God knows what your mobo is recognizing the setup as. Or you could pick up a 2nd 4GB stick and run it along side your 2x2 setup. 4GB in dimm 0 and 2, and 2GB in dimms 1 and 3 for a total of 12GB of RAM... not too shabby.

I'm not necessarily getting bad performance at an (depending on what I am playing) bit I'm looking for things to improve my performance. Now that I've had this pc for about a year, I'm starting to find games that improving performance in any way possible could really help.
