So the case i have has
Maximum Video Card Length
9.06" (230mm) With Drive Cages
12.01" (305mm) Without Drive Cages

The card I want which is r9 280 windforce
Length 11.18" (284mm)

Now what does it mean by some drive bays will be unusable?
I will only use 1 drive bay for a 1tb drive
will i be okay?

Solution
If it is specified it means you can remove one of the drive bays to install a longer GPU.
I don't know which case it is, so it is hard to more specific.

Look at your manufacturer webpage for some pics.
