I recently upgraded my GPU from a GT 640 to a Asus R9 270x but ever since I upgraded, my display driver stopped responding and just leaves me with a black screen most of the time but only sometimes it successfully recovered. It happens all the time on whatever I'm doing from playing games, watching a movie on VLC or either on YouTube. I have no idea what to do. It is getting really annoying so any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

My Specs:
Mobo: Intel Z87
CPU: Intel i7 4770k
GPU: Asus R9 270x
RAM: 12GB
PSU: 600 watts
OS: Windows 8.1 64bit

Reinstalling the whole windows ? isn't that a bit exaggerated ? and time consuming !

You can check in the device manager on the 3rd tab (details) what "Vendor ID" and what "Device ID" the device has and download the latest drivers
How: (still in the 3rd tab) in the "Property-" pull-down menu choose Hardware ID's and in the "value-" field you should see something like this:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1056&SUBSYS_1491028&REV_A1

meaning : 10DE is the HEXadecimal VENDOR-ID
and 1056 is the HEX for the DEVICE-ID of my own videocard.

Write down the VEN and DEV codes and look them up on : http://www.pcidatabase.com/

There they a database will show you what type (exact name) of device it is and you can download the exact drivers...

Are you talking about from the Device Manager or the drivers that we install from the internet? If so, I already tried the one from the internet but not from the Device Manager. I am a noob too, sry.

Looks like drivers issue.. If uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers doesn't solve the issue move your important data to another drive and do a fresh install of Windows and then install the latest drivers from AMD website.. If the problem doesn't go away I'd suggest to RMA the card.
BTW, What are the temps of the card (idle/load)?

for me it is:
Chip Number: NVidia NVS 4200m
Chip Description: NVidia NVS 4200m
Notes: ThinkPad t420

(I installed win7 recently and the owner of the laptop called me and I told him to do it this way and call me if it doesn't work ... I haven't heard from him since ... I can assume that it worked ! )

Let me know if it worked,
Cheers, Louise.
