I'm new here and I hope I've posted this in the right section!

I'm trying to get dual monitors to work with an extended display. I'm currently using the XFX Radeon R9 270 Graphics Card (2GB, GDDR5) and I've connected my main display via HDMI and the second display using DVI, although there were complications with this outlined below:

My main display only has DVI and VGA ports, so I used a DVI male/HDMI female adaptor. I do not have a second DVI/DVI cable and I'd like to avoid buying another if I can fix this problem without it.
My second display only has a VGA port, so i used a VGA male/DVI female adaptor.

The main display monitor is the one I used before I decided to try out extended display and it still works fine, it's the second display which won't detect a signal. If I go onto the screen resolution settings by right clicking on the desktop I can see that my computer has detected both screens and I can choose to extend/duplicate displays and which one I'd like as my main monitor, so I assume they're connected? It even tells me the monitor's brand and model, which are:

Main display - Compaq Q2022
Second display - Acer K192HQL

The reason I'm using adaptors for the monitors is to save me money until I can safely afford a new monitor with both HDMI and DVI ports.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: This is what I understand of the situation: My computer detects the monitor but my monitor detects no signal? I have tried the connections several times, maybe it's that? But I cannot get it to work at all. If I disconnect the second monitor, my main display flashes on and off.

Solution
You need to connect the dvi to vga adapter to the video card then use a vga cable from the adapter to the video card. The dvi cable is probably a dvi-d cable.

The video card has 2 dvi connections a dvi-i and dvi-d. You need to make sure the dvi to vga adapter is plugged into the dvi-i port as it will not work is plugged into the the dvi-d port. VGA is an analog signal and dvi-d is digital only while dvi-i is digital and analog.

I've got the adaptor on the monitor, is that okay? It seems to be working fine for the main display monitor. I've tried both DVI connections on the back of the video card, only in one does my computer and AMD Catalyst Control Center detect the second display monitor, which I assume is the DVI-i connection?

I hope maybe you see this!
I'm using the DVI/DVI cable from my video card to my primary display, no adaptors.
I bought a new adapter today, a DVI male, VGA female to go into the back of my video card & I am using a VGA cable from the adaptor to my secondary display, this should work should it not? I've tried both DVI ports in my video card to make sure it's the DVI-i port I'm using but my second display detects no signal? Once, it came up with "this input is not supported" but that was when I didn't have my primary display connected. Maybe the adaptor is faulty? I cannot get my head around this!

I have just bitten the bullet and purchased a new 1920x1080 monitor with a DVI port, so I'll just be using DVI from now on, but I'd really like to know why this didn't work for me haha

Yes. The monitor was being used with another computer, although it was VGA to VGA with no adaptors, straight from the motherboard to the monitor on that one

EDIT: I've looked on the adapter, and the 4 pins around the wife flat pin aren't as tall as all the other pins or the wide flat pin. Is it supposed to be like this? They're all the same length. Faulty adaptor perhaps?

EDIT: If I only connect the adaptor and VGA I get "input not supported"

Donkey mistake by me! I hadn't even thought to check the settings on screen resolution. I had it set to "Show on display 1 only" and because the second screen wasn't showing up as detected until I clicked detect I thought it wasn't working... shameful really. I was using AMD Catalyst Control Center mainly and it wasn't showing up as detected on there either so I thought it just wasn't being connected
