Let me ask this again -- shorter and more coherently:

How do I erase MS Word so I can make a new clean installation?

There are several "erase.exe" utilities offered online, but some of them look dangerous. There is one available for download, purportedly from MS, but it doesn't list XP as a compatible OS.

The normal uninstall doesn't work. I've been through the instruction list -- remove normal.dot, etc., but it's not working. I need something deeper.

I had looked at MSICUU2.exe but decided against it for several reasons, among them -- Microsoft discontinued it because of potential damage to the OS, and my problem is not with the installer, rather that MS Word 2000 freezes up (but not the other elements of the Office Suite installed together as a package) and becomes unresponsive. The problem started when Word was already installed and working. Just, after I had been using it for awhile, one time when I opened it had quit working. What I need is a cleanup to complete the uninstall and make a clean new install.

OK. I found the answer in Revo Uninstaller. After the standard uninstall utility finished, Revo found more than 9,000 leftover files and registry entries. When all those were deleted via the Revo process, MS Office 2000 installed nicely and Word worked faster than it has for years.
