For a File / Print Server which would be the easiest to set up and maintan for a home server? It will be on a UPS so boot up times are not really needed as long as it boots up and can stay up for months at a time without need of a restart and/or maintance of some kind. Also interface which one will be kinder to my family who are use to the Windows 7 interface so when something is not going right they can just look at the server screen and see if it is there or not.

In that does the latest version of FreeNAS even support being a Print Server?

That's a perfect use for FreeNAS. However, it's not Windows 7 and needs a little more than "just look at the server screen". You can always set up a Windows machine and share out files and printers (just remember the simultaneous connection limit for non-server OS's) if you want to maintain the Windows interface throughout.

FreeNAS doesn't have any print server features by default. It can be added but takes a decent amount of time/knowledge to get working. It's not something your average user would do as the majority of setup is done through a command line.

Although FreeNAS is great at being a NAS, I think in this situation Ubuntu would be your best choice. There is also more support available for Ubuntu since it's widely used.

The OS will be Linux probably Ubuntu as written above which i did not know until now FreeNAS is command line based. To casper1973 thank you for telling me about that feature of FreeNAS and that it does not come with a preloading print server software package.

So for now any suggestions on how to find a distro of Ubuntu or another Linux Server which is good to use as a file and print combo server?
