Can't get past 4.4GHz 4770K

Wondering if anyone can help, got my 4770K OC'ed to 4.4GHz @ 1.17volts, HT disabled. It passes an hour of OCCT without going over 60c (using a waterloop for CPU cooling). I tried going up to 4.5GHz but I kept crashing when loading the OS with WHEA errors, this was happening all the way up to 1.25 Volts (I didn't really want to go past that). My question is, is this normal to just kind of hit a brick wall? I understand each chip is different but when I got 4.4 @ 1.17 I thought it would at least make 4.5 @ 1.25? Is this just a not so good chip or am I missing something? Thanks.

It is not uncommon for them to do exactly that, hit a brick wall. Many times it takes as much as 0.1+ volt to achieve another 100mhz once they have hit the wall. 4.4 Ghz is a pretty average 4770k. However you should be perfectly safe at 1.275-1.280 and that may be enough to see you to 4.5.

As you say I might go upto 1.28 and see how it gets me, I'm happy enough with 4.4 but if I can squeeze 4.5 then why not :D

Well, believe it or not just moved upto 1.26 and running OCCT now for an hour, no crash at 4.5GHz.
