Looking to upgrade or build new system. Will buy from Amazon or Frys

  • • Purchase Date: Next 2 months
    • Budget: $700 (partial system)
    • Intended Use: Movie watching, 3D rendering and Graphics Workstation
    • No monitor needed
    • OS needed
    • Location: Midwest USA
    • Reason: Computer is getting old. I want to tinker with it, update it & make ie faster.
Currently HAVE:

  • • Case: I'm using an Antec P160 ATX CaseATX case - want to keep

    • PSU: I bought a top rated unit 3 years ago, Should be fine - want to keep

    • HDD: I have many large HDD's all in the box that have become added over the years. Storage, redundant data etc. Currently newest 1TB is the CDrive --want to upgrade to a SSD C: Drive

    • Graphics: have a 6800 series radeon card, crossfire bridge capable - want to keep

    • Screen: outputting to a large screen via HDMI

    • Motherboard-Need new

    • CPU: Currently i-5 looking to stick with intel. Wouldnt mind upgrading to a i7 if thats what's recommended--I know dual CPU's a good idea if I'm doing a lot of rendering (see programs). Is this worthwhile or too expensive?

    • Audio: Onboard optical jack to surround - want to keep this kind of setup

    • Programs: 3D Modeling Suites (3DS Max and Maya), Adobe Creative suite, Some number crunching, emulating.

    • I don't want to worry about overclocking -- I want to set my computer up once and be done with it (generally, unless adding new software/hardware)
Questions:

  • • Can motherboard graphic output work in conjunction with the Video card? (a la crossfire?) OR is it one or the other-- Am I wasting money if I plug into the graphic card but have one sitting there in the motherboard?

    • Can (should?) I salvage the 8GB of RAM i have (Not sure about specs, but they were mid-tier about 3 years ago)

    • I do often transfer lots of data via USB stick. My USB 3.0 seems really slow on current setup, is there a faster way to transfer to stick? My macbook pro USB seems much faster.

    • I have Win 7 --Should I upgrade to 8? 10?

    • Is it possible or recommended to duplicate my current windows setup to the new, or is a re-install of EVERYTHING the best route? This alone could take a lot of time to get everything installed and set up to where it was.
