Hi all,
Just noticed that the XFX Radeon R9 280X has two power connectors, a six pin and eight pin. I am assuming that these both need to be plugged into the PSU, but my PSU,FirePower ZT Series 550W 80Plus Bronze, only has two 6 pin cords for the PCI-e. I didnt see any 8 pin. Can a six pin go in an 8 pin? Or im i missing something.

Thanks

Solution
Obviously you can't use a 6-pin connector in an 8-pin slot.

You need adapters using molex connectors to get that 8-pin connector.

Though, it's recommended that the R9 280X needs a 600W PSU, so using the adapter may not be the best idea.

Would it harm the GPU by doing that, considering it is designed for a 8 pin?

Well its actually brand new

You'll be quite on the edge, the 280x will draw up to 330w looking at some benchmarks, if your CPU is a 125w+ like an AMD FX you'd be near 450w( though only if all cores would be in use, unlikely with current games), at 80%+ efficiency your 550w will give around 440-470w...

However if you have a more efficient CPU it should be just enough.
