do you need to pay for the 3g internet for the ps vita. also are you able to use 4g on a 3g device for faster internet on the go.

I think only the first gen 1000's not the slim 2000's have the 3g capability, and only select ones at that. And yes you needed to be paying for a 3G plan from a provider that could supply for the Vita.

To add up on that, if the hardware supports 3G only, it'll run up to that transmission technology and its relative speed, period.
The only way you'll achieve more is with WiFi.

If you don't want to spend for a separate data plan and already got a good one with your iPhone/Android/Windows phone which supports Hotspot setups, you can use that too.
I did it for a while, worked like a charm and allowed me to go over the 3G limitation.
