Current build:
AMD FX-8350 BE
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
8GB HyperX RAM
MSI R9 270X (I know, it's lacking)
Then the rest is non relevant.

I'm looking into i5s and i7s.
The motherboard I'm looking at is the MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition
The two CPU's are the i5-4690k and the i7-4790k

I'll more than likely get a 970 GPU along with them if I do upgrade.

The things I do are:
Play games (duh)
Render a shit ton of everything. From videos to huge photoshop desktops @ 4k (Where I'm lacking I feel)
Stream games freely at 1080p
And the everyday things such as coding and webshit.

Is it worth the 3-400$ to upgrade my CPU?
And should I go for a 280x or 970 for gaming with either of the CPUs?

Solution
The upgrade to i5 is not worth it, plain and simple. You are better of spending that money on a highend GPU, and you gonna be so much happyer about your gaming experience. ;)

If you render alot of stuff, then you need an i7 to make the difference.

Well it is certain that it is worth it to upgrade your graphics card. At the current time I would not be so sure about upgrading the processor quite yet (only because the 8350 should be able to do everything that you are saying you want to do with it.) Of course the i5 and i7 are going to be better, but if you have something that works well, why fix it? That is a lot of money to spend to upgrade to Intel. I would say just wait until your 8350 cannot keep up to the tasks that you want to do with it, then upgrade to Intel. By then, Intel will have chips out that are going to be better than what is available now.

As far as graphics cards go, the 970 is a clear winner over the 280x. It is even better than the 290x and costs around the same.
