C Drive keeps filling up randomly

I noticed that my C Drive (Windows installation directory) kept filling up until only about 1GB was left. No matter how many times I cleaned it up it always does this.
I used WinDirStat to see what was causing the problem and I found this thing called "<unknown>". It took up about 8.8 GB and had no info on it whatsoever. It wasn't even a file that I could access. Even though everything else had a name and directory and I had an option to delete them, when I right click on the file everything is just grayed out and I'm just sitting there staring at it. I think it's a virus or something. I ran Avast through my whole system but nothing pooped up. Not even with Malwarebytes.

So what do I do? I don't wanna reinstall everything. :(

I just went through this. The problem in my case was that System Restore was set to use 50% of the disk space - it was using nearly 60Gb Gb of a 120Gb SSD OS drive! You might want to check and see how much space Sys Restore is using and move the slider back if necessary.

System>System Protection>System Protection Tab> click on the C drive in Protection Settings and the Configure. It will show you the slider with how much space is being used.

It's one possibility to check

Oh Thanks. So its not a virus. Thank goodness.

But the space still keeps filling up. I just cleaned it with CCleaner and I had 6.5 GB of free space. An hour later, I only have 1.6GB of free space.
What do I do ?!?!??
