The 780ti will be slightly better, but the 970 has faster RAM. Overall, I would get the 970 as it has extremely similar performance at a much lower cost. If you want to get the best card regardless of price, get the 980.

Its actually been tested numerous times that these cards have almost the same performance. The 970 is obviously the better way to go as its a newer generation card and is cheaper the 780 Ti. I have a 970 my self as it is very amazing.

The 780ti is MUCH more expensive than the 980... Either get a 970 (same performance as 780ti for cheaper) or get the 980.

Also the 980 is the second fastest card on the market next to the R9 295, and of course excluding the Titan because thats just bullcrap performance right there.

It doesn't make sense to spend 170 bucks to go from the 970 to the 780 Ti and not spend another 70 for the 980. I would either get a 970 and save the 170 for a second one later on or go straight to the 980. The 780 Ti is just an awful purchase at that price.
