A bit of background:
I live in a dorm where I can only use an ethernet cable to get internet.
I am at the library using it's wireless clear across campus.
HP Pavilion dv6 notebook PC
Windows 7

I am not sure how it happened but yesterday morning I woke up and I saw that I wasn't connected to the internet. It showed the little yellow triangle with an exclamation point. Often, our dorms internet goes out, but my roommate was on his just fine. I tried restarting, I diagnosed the problem but it said something was wrong with the DNS (which shows up every time there is an internet problem), and I was told to flush the dns. None of it worked. I tried a separate ethernet cable, but that also didn't work. Headed over to the library and the wireless there worked.

Honestly, I have no clue what is up. This is the first time that this has happened to me. If there is anything more specific you need answered, let me know and I will do my best.

Solution
open command prompt or powershell, and then type

"ping -a 127.0.0.1"

This is the loopback test to see if your NIC is causing problems.
Do you each have a dedicated RJ45 from the wall, or are you behind a hub?

If behind a hub, and no other ports work, then chances are the hub is bad.

If you have separate jacks on the wall, try your roommates line on your notebook.

Chances are this problem isn't with a configuration on your PC, but rather with the network switch, but testing other devices (such as your roommates pc) on your line needs to be done to eliminate your PC as the culprit.

It's straight from the wall and I tried all the jacks in our room (and the next one).

His desktop and laptop both work fine, but my laptop is killing me.
