I'm upgrading my mother board and want to install all my components on the new mobo, but the problem is I have a pre installed windows ( by HP) and no disk, so basically OEM and I'm afraid that windows might have to be reinstalled on my formatted existing hard drive.

If it does come to that I want a safe way to backup all my data( program files). I have Around 800Gb of data and most of it is digitally downloaded games through Steam and such, and it would be a real pain to re download. I do have an external 1Tb western digital passport hard drive and was wandering if there was a way to safely transfer everything to it as a backup and if I am forced to format my existing hard drive, then I can re transfer all my data to the new system from my external HDD. So is this possible?
Thanks in advance

Solution
use the sys prep tool and select Out of Box Experience. Select "Generalize"
This removes drivers and lets you bring your windows to a new motherboard. You will need a new license key.

First of all thanks for the reply :)
But i have a few questions:
Will this transfer only my windows or my whole system with the data?
How much will a new key be approximately?

you've really taken a huge burden off my back
After a few more queries im ready to close this post

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-installation-transfer-new-computer.html

I found the above link, and i will be adopting method 1 instructed by it, right? So is this tutorial safe to follow?

Also i read that my current windows account should be a standard account and not Administrator account when using Sysprep because aparently it will delete the Admin account and its data. So i should just create a new account for Admin and turn my current account into standard right?

Finally, considering that my software is OEM and i have no installation disk, a new key definitely will work right? If i purchase the new key, it will surely work without any issues?

Sorry for being a little paranoid, but ive spent so much this month and i really want to get this right

Thank you so much for all the help

That looks like a good accurate article. I keep my profile, as admin. When installing widows, you create a second account, a temporary without Admin privileges. When windows is installed, login to your old Admin account, delete the temporary one you just created. Your old one with just loose its personalization, like desktop backgrounds and folder options (like how icons are displayed, i.e.: large icon view, list view, detail view, etc...) just turn these features back on after you are done.

You will most defiantly need a new key, the old one is linked to your OEM motherboard.

Keep in mind, after windows installed, first things first, Install your motherboard Chipset Drivers, then SATA, then all other drivers that come with board (sound, modem, etc...). Restart when prompted each time. When all is done, download Nvidia or AMD driver, or intel driver if no desecrate GPU is installed (Igpu).

Getting a key is not a problem, im fully prepared to get it and i know where im getting it from.

The drivers you described, all these will be provided along with the motherboard when i purchase it?
And as for GPU i earlier had a GeForce gt 545 that came with my computer, but i bought a Asus GTX 970 that came with the driver disc, so that will work right?

il give you a little bit more info:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uk&lc=en&docname=c03378743#N440

The link will show you everything to know about my computer, except now i have 12Gb RAM and GTX 970 card

Like i said, the GT 545 came pre installed and was set as the default video input and drivers were installed accordingly. Do i need to uninstall these drivers before transferring windows?

Drivers will be provided by motherboard, probably on a disk. As will the Nvidia drivers.
All drivers, including the GT 545 will be wiped so don't worry about that.

My concern for you, is the HP case. You may want to take a look at yours, but HP likes to create a proprietary Front Panel header for their Cases. Also, that case is very small. made for a Micro-ATX board. Just make sure the new motherboard is compatible with your HP case.
