Sony Vaio, Green Squares on boot; won't go any further

Hi, I'm asking this for a friend but recently his Sony Vaio laptop upon start up shows green sqaures/ rectangles just after loading to the windows sign and then won't go any further. My guess is either video card or connection to the screen though could it be as simple as needing a fresh install of Windows 7?

Any help appreciated.

That behavior usually indicates a graphics problem, you can attempt to connect to an external monitor to ensure it isn't an internal cable but I personally wouldn't expect any different outcome.
I'm also pretty sure attempting an OS install won't go anywhere

I would be inclined to consider the laptop dead but there are fixes available (reflow for possible short-term, reballing for longer term) depending upon your model, it may not be a fiscally responsible option though
