I have a refurbished computer in which the company installed, but did not activate, Windows 8.0 Pro. The warranty expired before I discovered the issue and now I am faced with an operating system that won't let me do very much because it has never been activated and they did not provide an activation key. Can I update to 8.1 and have the system activated after the update?

The win8.1 product key should work for windows 8 if they are the same ie - 8.1 pro will work for 8 pro, 8 home will work for 8.1 home...
So one you get your windows 8.1, you can use that key to activate and upgrade.
Keep in mid that you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64bit. THAT would require a full reinstall.
