Should I go with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?

I am building my first PC and I'm wondering which OS would be the best option. (The PC will be mostly used for gaming). I would rather go with Windows 7 as I'm familiar with it and like it a lot, but mainstream support is ending in January. I've heard many bad things about Windows 8 (but I heard 8.1 was better and that Windows 8 has faster booting times) and I'm not too keen on the start menu being in a tablet like format.
I am fairly torn so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You could always just install the classic start menu from other sources. I definitely recommend getting Windows 8.1 since its being mainly supported by Microsoft right now.

yea definitly go for 8.1 is much faster than windows 7 and like the other guys said you can download programs to make the start menu go away and turn it into a normal windows 7 looking search bar i used to use something called shell i forgot the name sorry.. plus windows 7 doesnt get updated anymore so sooner or later it will get really slow and hard to use
