Your weak link will be the motherboard, not the CPU. That board is only 4+1 power phase and has no heat syncs on the VRMs. And while it will be OK for light OC'ing, I would not push it too hard. Start by just increasing the CPU clock multiplier a click at a time. Do this in BIOS; no software OC'ing. Save settings, exit to Win and run something like Intel Burn Test at its default settings. Watch that the core temps do not exceed 62C for more than a mometary peak at most. If IBT shows a stable result, you can go back into BIOS and repeat. Eventually you will get an unstable result in IBT. At that point, rather than boost the vcore, I'd suggest living with the result.

You can also use AMD Overdrive to test your multiplier increases w/o having to return to BIOS each time. But when you are done, I'd make the settings permanent in BIOS. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4645-amd-overdrive.html

I have the same CPU as you. Sure it's old and outdated for todays standards, but overclocked it can still compete even with the newest 4.2ghz FX processor. (Cinescore11 7.50) Like the person above said, you need to cool down your VRM if you are going to do any serious overclocking without crashing and you NEED a good cooler. Air cooling is alright, but don't expect the same as a nice closed loop water cooler like the Corsair h100i.

Ok for starters, you need to buy these bad boys to put on top of the vrm chips http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708011

I installed those on my M4A88TD/USB3 and installed a nice 90 CFM fan pointing right at them. At full load at 1.5.2 voltage it never exceeds 38c which is great. (Core temps idle 18-20- full Prime load 35-38 MAX)Now, even with good cooling and ambient temps, do not expect miracles with this cpu. The HIGHEST i managed to get this cpu was 4.5ghz @ almost near 1.6 v and that is extremely high and i just did it to see if it even booted.

Now, from my experience, anything above 4.3ghz it starts to get a little unstable even with a good amount of voltage. Maybe i'm doing it wrong, but hey, even at 4.2ghz.It's good enough to run most games and programs at a very damn nice decent speed. Even with a overclocked Radeon 7980 GPU i notice that my CPU holds me down in some heavily cpu intensive games, which is a sign that one day i will need to do a nice FX 5ghz upgrade.

My Settings to get a decent STABLE 4.2 ghz Multiplierx 20.5 Ht/Nb both 2400Mhz - Ram settings stock timing 12gb 1033mhz (dont mess with ram settings these CPU's hate anything above 1033) Voltage 1.5.2

I've got my X6 1100T Black Edition at 3.7MHz with an ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, stock heatsink and fan for CPU and nothing done to the MoBo for the VRM chips. Is this wise or safe to do so? Right now, with HWMonitor, my max temps under full load and ultra settings while gaming at 1080p, 60fps with Wolfenstein The New Order, I'm getting a max of 55-56C on my CPU....pushing 1.45-46 Volts.

The max operating temp for the X6 1100T is 62C.

Not too bad for stock, huh?

Yes, considering you are stock. I presume you meant you have Turbo Mode turned off and are running all six cores at 3.7GHz? Normally, turbo core will only allow 3.7 GHz with 3 cores or less being used.

Yes, that's exactly it. My CPU was getting too hot, though, so I have to bring it back to stock settings, :(.
