Hi Everyone,

My brother and I built his very first PC (Intel CPU, AMD GPU, Windows 8.1 - Specs are below) this past Thursday, and we've been running into an issue that we just can't resolve.

When he plays a game, within 20-30 minutes or less, his screen will go black, loop sound and completely freeze; forcing him to do a hard restart to his PC. The games he has tried so far on Steam are "Fistful of Frags" & "No More Room in Hell". His PC is way more than capable of handling these Free-to-Play games.

So far we've done the following:

  • - Pulled the Video Card out and re-installed it
    - Uninstall his Video Card driver and re-install it (he's running the latest AMD Driver: Catalyst Omega 14.12)
    - Uninstalled the latest video card driver and reverted to an older version from September
    - Ran temperature tests (He maxed out at 66 C when a game was running)
    - Ran FurMark at 1920x1080 (maxed at 83 C)
    - Ran CPU Stress Test with Prime95 (maxed out around 66 C)
    - Changed 60 Mhz to 30 Mhz in display settings
    - Checked Event Log Errors, but had nothing to report on
At this point, we're not sure what else to do. This has just been extremely frustrating, and I'd love for us to play games together as soon as possible, so I'm hoping anyone here would be able to shed some light on how we can address the issue.

Below are his PC Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 54.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Crucial M500 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage 2: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 290 4GB TurboDuo Video Card
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)

Thanks so much for reading, as well as any help that you can provide.

No worries, I would still test the video card in another system to make sure that it is faulty but either way you should have the issue resolved. The r9 290 is a fantastic card I had the Asus one before I upgrade to the 295x2.

Hi,

It can be frustrating when this happens, it may be that the psu is insufficient? I believe the r9 290 requires a 750w psu. Also have you tested the ram to see if it is the problem? Can you swap out the psu or try running the video card in a different system?

Hey - thanks for your comment. We did a test where he connected it to the motherboard integrated graphics and it worked no problem. He's going to try and RMA his video card.
