WD Green speed?

After 2 years of usage, my 500GB WD Green started to act strange. The drive is almost filled up. read/write speed is still good at about 80-90mb/s. But when i'm playing games, it freezes and lags horribly (League Of Legends freeze everytime something demanding is happening, or i randomly click somewhere on the map. TF2 and CSGO freezes when i changes the graphics settings). This is not a graphics card related problem, because in any other games like Shadow Of Mordor or Darksiders 2 everything works smoothly. All the smart attributes are still in good condition. Is there a problem with my drive???

Hey spiwar. I'm sorry to hear you have issues with your drive. Have you tested it with DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostic) when you say that the SMART attributes are OK? I'd recommend that you run also the Extended Test to see what's the situation and give a feedback on the results: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows

Also here's some info on the HDD noises/sounds to give you some perspective of what's OK and what's not: How to tell if the noise or sound the drive is making is normal

Hope that helps. Let me know how things go with the test.

WD green drives are designed to be used mostly as a pure storage drives, not system drives. They also tend to be unreliable over the longer time periods of extensive use, that's why they have much less warranty than blue and black series (which are much faster and more reliable for that purpose).

That being said, all mechanical drives should be used peurely for storage these days; you should consider getting an SSD (like Samsung EVO 120 or 250GB) for your boot drive. This will improve performance immensely. As for your green drive, you can use it for storage after that, but having in mind the symptoms you described, it might be a wise idea to backup your data to a different drive (in fact, having backup is always advised).

Yeah, i know WD Greens aren't supposed to be used for daily use, but I didn't know it back then when i built my computer.

I did the quick test of the WD Life Guard, it was OK.
As for the sound, i heard a little clicking sound when I sat close to the case. I'll do an extended test and take a look at the data cable to see if it's faulty. If it is the data cable, then i'm in luck, because i have another spare one that came with my mobo, if it's the drive...... oh well my warranty peroid just ended last June.

Looking back at the receipt of the drive. Damn storage is cheap these days. 1 TB Blue in 2014 is even cheaper than 500GB Green back in 2012

Well you know how it is with technology, every day something new comes along and is more efficient and usually cheaper than its predecessor.
As for the drive, hopefully everything turns out to be OK and there are no bad sectors. Actually @herrwizzo's advice on the SSD for the system drive is a pretty good one. And if you have anywhere where you can backup you could go for it, if you are worried about any important data you may have, even though right now it seems like the drive's SMART status is OK.

Replaced the SATA cable. The noise is gone but the speed is still slow. well, it's been a great time.... I'll have the Green as my backup drive then... thanks for helping me out.
