Hey,

I was wondering about which graphics card I should pick.
On benchmarks, I saw that the 970 was getting 10 more fps on average than the lighting.
Now I'm wondering which one I should pick.
I do want to overclock my graphics card.

Thanks in advance.

Solution

Not on the motherboard itself, but on the power supply. The GTX970 uses roughly 100Watts less under load.

The GTX970 uses roughly 180Watts compared to 280Watts on the...
GTX970 hands down.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_970_SC_ACX_Cooler/25.html

It gets similar performance on average but uses a lot less power and is less noisy. Some models like this EVGA will even turn off the fans.

The GTX970 also has several new features including H.265, HDMI 2.0 at 60FPS, voxel dyn light support, and MFAA. MFAA can help with anti-aliasing in supported games (more coming. last I checked it was 24 games. Roughly 15% average performance improvement for the ones I saw.)

So to be clear the GTX970 might be over 20% faster in some games that support MFAA well compared to the R9-290X. Additionally there are issues with GPU throttling on the R9-290X depending on your room temperature, case cooling etc.

This also doesn't account for extra overclocking and some people have squeezed out over 10% more on the GTX970's which is very unlikely on the R9-290X cards that already run hot.

In particular I recommend the EVGA GTX970 ACX 2.0 SC (1.17GHz base) for about $350 USD.

thanks, although the 970 beats the lightning in almost every benchmark (not by much most of the time)

but is there a limitation on wattage that my motherboard has? I'm not sure which one i will pick yet, but do I have to take the wattage of my graphics card and see if my motherboard can handle it?

The GTX970 uses roughly 180Watts compared to 280Watts on the R9-290X (varies by overclock and model).

Ask around but I doubt many will recommend against the GTX970.

Unless you have a burning desire to use Mantle I can't think of one benefit the R9-290X has but plenty of cons such as noise.

Solution
just to give an insight, i own an ichill 670. i have had lots of gpu's for the past years, and the I-chill is the coolest that i have ever used.

i mentioned this several times already here in toms, but just to give an idea.
i play bf4, with my old 560Ti, i was having 60+ in temp. but with a 670 ichill playing the same game in the same room, my temp hovers at 49-50. this is at full load. and no it is not noisy, and i agree with the reviews of my card. very very nice

Idk if you've already made your purchase, but if you havent, please disregard most of what photonboy has said as he is clueless. Between your two choices the cards are on par, aside from higher power consumption from the lightning.
And no, the lightning will not run absurdly hot, MFAA will not provide a 20% fps increase (expect 3-10% from the games that support it), and you can OC the lightning as you would any other card.

You will get roughly the same fps from each up to 1080p, but above 1080p the lightning is your best choice.
