UPDATE: I FOUND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM
see my last post http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2430283/advice-years-graphics-card-failed-black-screen-windows-logo-safe-mode-onboard-graphics-works.html#14869001. IT WAS THE GPU THAT WAS FAULTY! So piece of advice to you guys, if you ever experience this and narrow it down, don't be afraid to suspect that the graphics card is indeed faulty. It would save you much frustration and effort trying to fix what is actually a hardware problem

So my graphics card (a Club3D HD7850) has been working well for over 2 years (same age as the rest of the PC). Until 2 days ago after playing 4 League of Legends matches in a row, I closed League and went to chrome to do some internetting. Suddenly, the entire screen went white and my mouse&keyboard became unresponsive. I tried to use the Reset button but it didn't work, so I had to hold the power button down and power it up again.

That is when it happened. My PC boots up, past the ASROCK bios screen and then the "Starting Windows" logo, but before I could even see the "Welcome" screen everything turns black. No cursor, no start-up sound. It's like the system is frozen, even the Reset button didn't work as well, same as during the white screen. The monitor does not display "No signal" so I know it is receiving input from my GPU.

I can boot to safe mode, and uninstall/disable the drivers to get windows to boot normally. But then I can't use the gpu
If I try to reinstall the graphics card drivers, or windows automatically installs them, I get the black screen again when I restart the PC.
Drivers I tried: AMD's latest Omega 14.12 as well as the older 14.9 version

However, I can go to my Asrock bios and set the Primary Graphics Adapter to Onboard, switch my HDMI cable from the GPU to the motherboard and everything works well.

So after browsing hundreds of black screen threads (most are with new graphics cards or they can see a cursor and hear a start-up sound) I have come to the harrowing conclusion that my hd7850 has failed, at a mild age of 2 years

I would just like to hear expert opinions to confirm if it is indeed my graphics card that has failed me, because it has survived a few blue screens, freezes and other weird shit in the past. It would suck to know it failed after 2 years just after the warranty expired.

I don't have a spare PC or GPU in the house to test in and I'm still a student so I'm not in a position to buy a new graphics card either, however tempting that may be.

Possibly Helpful Info: -I reseated my GPU to the second PCI-E slot, but it didn't work.
-Recently I downloaded realtemp to check CPU temps and realised it's running hot at up to 78C on Dragon Age Inquisition, 67C in LoL. Silly me reseated the cpu heatsink without reapplying thermal compound my but my i5 3470 still runs fine.
edit: OH and the GPU's fan still runs normally when booted up, as if nothing happened. It's not running loud at full speed like when its improperly connected. Now I'm using onboard graphics with a hd7850 sitting in the PC like a brick
-I overclocked it before but seldom, the GPU has been running at stock for some time when this happened.

Manymany thanks in advice to someone who can help me fix this!!

Solution
If your igpu is working fine; displaying everything etc., than your gpu is broken. You could try to repair it, just hang it over to someone who is a specialist. I doubt that its the driver problem.

I suspect it as well. I'm hoping that buying a new GPU would be the last possible solution.
I live in Singapore, where do you think I can bring it to? Would the cost of repairing it be worth it or should I just get a new card?

Or before you rule it out entirely, go to device manager and uninstall the card (remove the driver as well), reboot the PC using the card and let Windows handle the driver, then update it with the most recent (stable) driver.

Did you mean uninstall the driver, and remove the card as well? LOL

No just uninstall the card from device manager and uninstall the driver in the process.

I tried it,
it is fine when windows installs a driver by default. It will show up as VGA Controller and in GPU-Z it is running at a low core of 100mhz and 550 mhz memory clock, (my stock 7850 runs at 910mhz and 1200mhz memory)

but right after I reboot when I install a driver from AMD- BAM there it is again. A big black, unresponsive, mute screen.

Sigh, this is a really horrible experience. The card is only 2 years old, definitely not buying from club3D or amd again. I'm going to the greener pastures

Try the sames thing to get working again. But instead of downloading amds driver update the driver through device manager. It should bring it back to working shape. Its likely an issue within your registry of windows. A system wipe is the best way to resolve it so your drivers can stay optimized for newer games.

Thank you for sticking with me :)
1) Can you elaborate on how to install through device manager? I tried clicking "browse my computer for driver software" and linking it to the latest amd 14.12 omega drivers but still same prob
2) I have also did a clean install before this, but I didn't format the entire hdd first. I clicked the "Custom" option and somehow i managed to preserve my folders in a Windows.old. Do you think that way of install is not "clean" enough? I avoided formatting because that would consume a lot more of my time to backup all my files onto another drive and transfer it back again

To update the driver through device manager right click the device and select update driver. Then click search automatically.
As for your windows installation how long ago was it made. Generally that will happen when you don't delete the old partitions and recreate them before installing.

I clicked search automatically it recognized as vga controller and it said the "latest drivers were installed" :\
For the windows installation i just did a clean installation right after I got this problem, trying to get rid of the black screen.
As for the windows date itself, it is the pre-service pack 1 from 2009. Ah, so I should do a complete reinstall of windows by formatting the drive? that should delete the old partitions in the process right?

Yes, also be sure not to use a beta driver for your card, and possibly even try one that is a few releases old if you have any problems. When you uninstalled the driver for your system did you remove catalyst control as well?

Yes i never use any beta drivers. I uninstalled catalyst from control panel and made sure the drivers were uninstalled.
