Few Questions before I start a build.

Okay, number one:
How do I use an anti static wrist strap. Some people say leave the PSU plugged in but switched off and some people say to plug it out. Help please :)

2. If I build barefoot on a wood floor and wood table, would I be grounded?

3. Have HardDrives changed in the last 4-5 years? I have an old HDD from another PC, it works fine and uses sata. Could there be anything else that would make it unusable that I don't know about?
Thanks :)

1. Don't bother with an anti-static wrist strap, its not like your working barefoot on a carpet and rubbing your feet across it :D . Just when your working on your build leave it unplugged and before you add parts/cpu/HDD just touch something metal (bench/chair/side of pc case) to discharge any electricity.

2. Yes but still "discharge" yourself on something metal when working on your build.

3. HDD have upgraded to Sata 6gb/sec transfer rates from Sata 3gb/sec. You would probably notice a small difference or if you had the extra cash I would go with an SSD like a Samsung Pro or Crucial MX100 at least for your OS then use your old drive for storage. But if you decide to use the old drive that would be fine, theres nothing that would...

Wrist strap: Put it around your wrist (I know, I'm Einstein) then the other end to something grounded. I usually use my computer case, connecting it to something metallic. If I use a wrist strap at all, mostly I don't.
Mostly I just touch my computer case with both hands and off I go.
I like to pull the PSU from the wall. So nothing is powered on while I'm in there.

2. No clue

3. Should work flawlessly, I have 2 HDDs from 2006 in my machine. They might be a bit slower than todays harddisks but they will work. My old are pushing 100-120 megabytes/s, my new one pushes 170 mb/s.

1) You don't need one if you are careful enough (except if you are leaving in a super humid area), but there is no need to take unnecessary precaution.

2) You don't want to be grounded you want to limit static discharge to your components. Wood is good electric insulator. This also why you should touch your case which is grounded. If any static electricity has built up, you will be able to discharge in the case, not in your components. The wrist strap simply makes sure you are automatically discharged.

3) Just plug the SATA and power cables it will be recognized automatically.
