All the research I've done points to a failing optical drive. However, I've been told its def not the drive and that I should instead be looking into a software conflict and that I should probably re-install the OS.

To eliminate a virus/malware issue I ran a multitude of scans that came back clean. Also ran CCleaner.

So I'm putting it out to the community. OS conflict or optical drive failing?

Yeah, its a blu-ray player. Model number is bd combo drive model ds-4e1s. It used to play everything and one night it just quit. Inserting a movie (dvd or b/r) into the drive gets no results. The discs aren't being acknowledged in any way. I try using VLC to play it back and that failed as well. I also uninstalled and re-installed the drivers and it still won't read them.
