Are you trying to transfer Windows? Because if you are that's not how it works.
If you want to back up specific files then you have to find those files and drag and drop them to the external hard drive.

You're only going to be able to move "regular" files (e.g. videos, MP3s, documents, etc.) by dragging and dropping.
If you try to move programs and the like and then move them back after a reinstall they're not going to work.
