ok so i have quite a simple question and that is i have a cable that connects my router to my pc the router is in downstairs living room and my pc is in my bedroom directly upstairs from the living room so we came up with a solution that we could puth the cable through a vent in the living room up the side of the house and through a hole we would make in the wall under the window this was over a year ago and we still have not done it so the only solution was to out the wire through the window for the time being but now it is getting seriously cold at night here dropping to around -2 and i get sick quiote often so around 2-3 months ago we started closing the window on the wire and by on i mean pulling the window completely closed on the wire to the point that where ever we close it causes the wire to be bent and not wanting to repetitively close the window on the same spot on the wire i began closing it on different spots to the point now where a good 1/4 of the wire is covered in these sort of crease marks and over the past month ive noticed my internet speed dropping to where my 40mb per sec download speed is now at 20 and my ping in games goes from previous 50 to a now 300-900 ping (also in some games when my ping isent too bad its like the wire stops working all the online characters run what ever way they were walking and then randomly they will teleport to where they actually are its the same effect as unplugging the cable then plugging it back in while your in a multiplayer game

sorry for that massive eyesore lol but i couldnt think of any other way of describing it accurately

Repetitively closing a window on an Ethernet cable will cause the metal to fatigue, and eventually will break the connections. You are likely seeing that damage in the dropped speeds.

You have a few options:

1- Drill the hole(s) and pass the cable directly.

2- Try the flat wire. These are really designed to run under carpets, and the window may still not fully close, and the wire may fatigue eventually.

3- WiFi (my desktop connects this way)

4- Powerline network adapters (I use these as a backup)

Whatever you do, you should not have to try and sleep while cold air is coming into your room...

the easiest way to run it is just by drilling a hole through the floor. i have done this before. plywood floor and drywall ceiling to drill out which is very easy to drill through.

i don't know if they make lan cable like this but i have seen tv cable inserts that are flattened to allow for putting through a window just like your describing. has a coax on each end to attach the cable to and about 6 inches of flat cable to pass under the closed window. if the make something like this it may be an option as well.

oh and final thought, depending on who/how your cable tv was installed it's possible you already have a hole in the wall in the right are that you can enlarge a bit to push the lan cable through. did this once as well with a lucky break of cable tv being in just the right place.

edit: a quick look on newegg shows all kinds of flat ethernet cable. could be along the lines of what i was thinking and allow the window to be closed. lots to look over here http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100016774&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&SrchInDesc=flat&Page=1&PageSize=30 first few are flat to show what i am thinking.

thank you for the advice and although it was not the answer i was looking for it was still very helpful but what i meant was could all this bending of the wire affect it in a way that it slows my internet speed and even stops it?

yes i plan on drilling a hole and passing the wire through i was just wondering if it was the wire thatb was causing the internet speed drop even though now it seems like a stupid question but thank you for the help
