Did I really just break my Motherboard?

I have the Asus H97M Pro4. All week it has been giving me trouble during the build process. I thought I finally figured everything out today when the computer actually turned on, and I was able to install Windows 8.1 on it. Though it was incredibly fast, and working well. There were still problems.

The first time I successfully launched Windows 8.1, I used it for about half an hour. Then I decided to shut it down. Later on when I came back to use my computer again, the power button wouldn't work. I removed the power cord and reconnected it, and then the computer booted successfully into Windows 8.1. Then I decided I just would avoid shutting down and only hibernate as this seemed to be a good temporary solution until I could have someone look at the PC. Computer was unable to shut down correctly, but restart, sleep, and hibernate worked fine.

Now I'm frustrated. I realized that my Motherboard had a really outdated bios (1.01) I went on this site http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H97M%20Pro4/?cat=Download&os=BIOS to download the latest 1.20 update. I did the quick flash and it did say that it was successful in updating the Bios.

Then it told me to "Press enter to restart computer." I pressed enter, and the computer completely shut off almost instantly and wouldn't turn back on. Now when I press the power button nothing happens. The only way to get a response from the Motherboard is to remove the power cord again and reinsert it. This causes the fans to spin for about 2 seconds and then they stop.

Did I damage my Motherboard by trying to upgrade the Bios? A semi-tech guy (he's good with computers but only because he's good at reading manuals he doesn't have much experience) is coming tomorrow and he's the one who helped get this running in the first place. I think he is going to be incredibly frustrated if it isn't working again. I'd like to get it working before he comes if there's anyway that's possible.

Solution
Two things I would suggest:

1. Check your standoffs - sounds like there could be a possible short there somewhere. Make sure that your motherboard is properly grounded.

2. Try taking out the CMOS battery and resetting it, that will usually clear out any hiccups in the BIOS.

If there's anything after that if your motherboard allows BIOS to be installed via USB, then I would suggest downloading the update via another system and loading the corrected BIOS on the USB. I've had that happen to me using an automatic BIOS update as well.

Yeah it's an Antec Truepower Classic 750W. Seems like there must be some sort of issue with the PSU. I couldn't understand why it could only power on the computer once, and then if somehow it shut down I had to manually remove the 12 pin connector from the mobo and reinsert it in order for the Computer to start. Now doing this only makes the CPU fan spin and not even the case fan.

Well it's either the PSU or motherboard. I am pretty sure there are tests you can do with paperclips maybe to see if a PSU is working well. I would not do one though unless you watch a video first (or maybe that tech guy can help you).

Thank you for your help, but I don't get how could the computer have been working fine all day and then just now I would experience trouble. It said that it successfully updated the Bios unless there is an issue with the new Bios it should have been able to start up. Everything was working perfect earlier. Now it's like the system is completely broken because of a Bios update. I don't get it

Seems to me that the computer starts when the motherboard is rebooted after being drained of all residual power, then encountering the fault and shutting off. If the BIOS updated successfully then it would pay to rule out all the other devices. Disconnect everything. HDD SSD DVD and all but one stick of RAM. Use the onboard GPU if you have one. Remove any discrete GPU. Remove all USB devices including keyboard and mouse. Try to boot. If it fails try the other RAM stick. If that fails try the RAM one at a time in the next slot. If it fails still you have pretty much narrowed it down to the Motherboard or possibly but less likely the PSU.

That's why I say if you can power on your PC you should be able to get the BIOS startup screen and be able to flash via USB if it allows it. I would think an Asus H97 would be able to have that feature.

I didn't see your response until after I wrote that. I was responding to turkey3_scratch. I will try to reset the Cmos battery that seems like a good idea. If that works I will be sure to give you best answer.

Hey everyone, I'm writing from the PC. I was going to do everything you guys suggested but I fell asleep as it was late. Somehow when I woke up the PC was working completely fine. The new bios was updated successfully, and the not turning on problem was fixed! It's strange how last night only the fan worked then this morning it could power on. I won't be shutting down to often, but I'm glad I don't have to completely avoid it now and know that the PC will turn back on without having to take it apart.
