Longtime reader but never posted on Tom's before, here goes.

I purchased a new video card recently, (EVGA GTX 660 Model# 02G-P4-3069-KB) and installed it after my old 560 ti began having crashing issues. Idling it is fine, like using Youtube or browsing the web. But the first and only time I've tried playing a game with it, the PC just shut down within about 15 seconds of the environment loading (menu screens were no problem, and the game was DCS btw). It promptly booted back up without incident after a few more seconds. I noticed a strange whining noise, perhaps coil whine, for about the last 5 seconds before it shut down. It's hard to describe the noise, but I'm 95% sure it wasn't some sort of fan, which leads me to believe the card is defected or my PSU was insufficient.

My PSU is a Thermaltake TR2 600 watt. I've heard nothing but bad news about that product, however in the year or so that I've had it, it seems to work fine.

So now, my question is - Should I upgrade my PSU (something I was thinking about doing anyways), or what is the likelihood of the card being bad? I replaced the 560ti with the 660 as the 560ti was having strange graphical and crashing issues, plus it had lots of hours on it. But I still have it and can re-install it if necessary. As stated before I was thinking about replacing the PSU, I'd just like a second opinion on that though.

Inb4 I find out the reason the 560ti was having issues was the PSU in the first place.:pfff:

Specs again:
PSU- Thermaltake TR-2 600w - don't think its the "P" model which seems to be more desirable.
New GPU- EVGA GTX 660 Model# 02G-P4-3069-KB
Old GPU- GTX 560 ti
Intel Core i7 2600 @3.4 Ghz
4 x 2GB RAM - not sure of the model, dell variety
2x 500GB HDD in RAID 0

Sorry for the wall of text,
Burrito

Sir, take a look a this list, your PSU is in tier FIVE (the worst one):

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html

You need to replace this PSU as soon as possible, this is more of a fire hazard than a power supply.

Recommended: any 550W+ PSU from tier 1, tier 2a or tier 2b. AVoid other tiers. If you need more specific recommendation, I can only say the best things about XFX and Seasonic PSUs (basically, XFX is made by Seasonic).

I believe that your old graphics card is fine and that it had issues for the exact same reason - your PSU.

Cheap power supplies suck. No two ways about it. When I first put this pc together I was low on funds and the antec case I bought came with a power supply. It worked (for the most part) for about a year or so. Started getting all kinds of funky issues and when one of my older graphics cards went fritzy I got rid of the antec and replaced it with a seasonic. Haven't had a power issue since. To be fair, that antec psu was a much older one, channel well was building them I think at that time (the era of the sonata II case). Now most antec psu's are built by seasonic or delta and have improved greatly in quality.

Yep, I saw that last night after posting and said "ahhh s***". Thanks for the reply, I will look around for a Seasonic or maybe a Corsair PSU

Its funny, the computer came with a 385 watt PSU with only about 16A on the 12 volt rail. I have no idea how it was able to power the 560 ti for as long as it did (maybe 1.5 years without issue), but i randomly decided to upgrade it one day to the thermaltake one.
I'll take your advice as well as herrwizo's, I'll check out some seasonic PSU's maybe in the 600 watt range and dump this one. Thanks.

Yea power supplies are getting scary anymore. I don't know if they're solely to blame, but the past couple of months I've seen more people posting about sparks, melting, fire and burning from various cables, either psu or their hard drives and ssd's more than I've ever experienced. People used to joke about the old p3's and amd's being 'heaters' but anymore it sounds like pc's are turning into full blown fireplaces.
