How to install windows xp to flash drive?

Hello, i got a big problem, my old pc doesn't start it says NTDLR is missing press Ctrl+alt+del to restart. That's not the main problem, i would reinstall windows and that would fix it up but i really need files stored on that pc, and there's only 900 free MB and windows xp requires 1200MB free, any suggestions how to install windows to flash drive or how to fix it?

Take that drive out
Connect it to another PC via a USB cable or dock
Retrieve whatever data you need from it
Put it back in and reinstall as needed.
