i7 4770k / i5 4690k - how much OC and what effect does it have?

[strike]Hi people. I've got the 4690k and was wondering: Is there really any substantial difference? I mean - I know about the video encoding improvements, but in terms of gaming - anything?[/strike]

PS: What temp. should I have when going full throttle? And how silent can a CPU cooler (which still is effecient) really get?

PPS: Currently it's 3.5. How much can I OC it to and what difference does that really do? I mean - in terms of FPS for current gen. games. Also: Is it worth the trouble? I'll be quiet now :p

Cheeeers and thanks :D

Okay, only because this is the millionth thread about this...
read through this http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2188781/4690k-4790k.html

no real gaming benefits yet, some people claim games are going to get superthreaded soon but i haven't seen any evidence of that yet. Once the i5 starts to show its age in gaming overclocking it will give you better results than an i7 necessarily would. Its really only for rendering and video encoding like you mentioned.

Thanks - and sorry, I can see that I should have Googled it. Blushing.

Thanks :) Whoah, information overload. I'd better find a guide for dummies.

no worries, just glad you care to ask before hand, which is smart

:D Btw. I just found this FPS comp. chart of interest to me. Is this for real? I mean - there is hardly any difference between stock and OC speed. Can this be true? Why does people OC then?

when the CPU holds the GPU back, but that rarely happens. My point is once you have a GPU strong enough to do so, (maybe SLI), then you might get a boost from OC. Games currently dont need all that strong of a CPU and the i5 4690k is quite strong as it is.

Less cpu dependency and harnessing the true power of the gpu is actually trending.

DX12 and Mantle represent higher cpu overhead and superior multi threading.

Even in some DX11 titles this is prevalent and a Athlon can be just as useful as a i7.

I am by no means a expert but I will just say it will be interesting what becomes the norm in the gaming world after a few years.

the goal would be to offload as much of the work onto the GPU as possible, that way gamers can get exactly what they need out of their hardware!
